Automated Microneedling (also known as Collagen Induction Therapy or CIT) is a new innovation in aesthetic medicine for treating the appearance of fine lines and acne scars. Microneedling with Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) drastically improves the skin’s overall appearance. During this procedure, tiny needles are used to create controlled micro-injuries to the skin in order to naturally produce collagen and elastin. The skin’s repair process results in improvement of the appearance of softer wrinkles. Microneedling creates superficial micro-channels that can be used with topical gels or serums to improve the appearance of the epidermal layer of the skin. At GLO, we use the Eclipse MicroPen™. The Eclipse MicroPen™ is the most advanced medical-grade automated Microneedling device on the market.
How Is MicroPen™ Different From Lasers?
Unlike lasers, the Eclipse MicroPen™ breaks up pigment mechanically and stimulates the collagen formation without heat. Removing heat from the equation makes for a safer, more comfortable treatment with a very low complication rate. No heat also equals less downtime! Most Eclipse MicroPen™ patients are red for less than 24 hours. You can get the procedure performed on a Friday and be back to normal for work on Monday.
What Can I Expect After a Micro-Needling Procedure?
The skin will be red and flushed, similar to a mild to moderate sunburn for about 24 hours. You may also experience mild swelling, tightness, and/or mild peeling. Side effects are temporary and typically resolve within 3 days. Total healing time depends on the depth of the treatment, skin type, and skin condition, and some may heal completely within 24 hours.
What is PRP?
Platelet Rich Plasma is a concentration of platelets in the blood that are crucial to wound healing. When used with Microneedling, PRP releases growth-factors into the skin to expedite the body’s own repair process. During the procedure growth-factors will stimulate new collagen and elastin. PRP is produced from an individual’s own blood. After a blood sample is obtained from a patient, the blood is put into a centrifuge, to separate the PRP from the blood. The blood is spun for approximately 15 minutes.
PRP contains highly concentrated amounts of natural growth factors that promote the regeneration process of soft tissues. The PRP is applied directly to the channels that were created from the Microneedling to further stimulate the natural healing process and creation of collagen.
After the treatment, your skin will be slightly pink and feel slightly sunburned. For most people, your skin will completely recover in 24-72 hours. Your body’s collagen production usually takes about 4-8 weeks, so you will continue to see improvements over this time.
